Catherine Bearder appointed to top post in European Parliament

Liberal Democrat MEP Catherine Bearder has today been elected to one of the top posts in the European Parliament after receiving the overwhelming backing of 425 of her fellow MEPs.

Catherine was voted in as a Quaestor, a position responsible for helping to manage the day-to-day running of the Parliament and representing MEPs on its executive body, the Bureau.

Thousands of pensioners in the South East to benefit from Lib Dem manifesto pledge

Pensioners would be guaranteed to earn at least an extra £790 per year by the end of the next parliament under Liberal Democrat manifesto plans, Pensions Minister Steve Webb has announced.

These changes mean the state pension will be worth at least £131-a-week by 2020, up from just £97.65 four years ago and is expected to benefit nearly 1.5 million pensioners in the South East.

Pupil Premium is helping children in South East score better exam results

Thousands of disadvantaged schoolchildren across the South East are reaping the benefit of the Pupil Premium, Local Euro MP Catherine Bearder said today.

Figures show that more youngsters from poorer backgrounds in local authorities across the region achieved five or more GCSEs at A* to C grade than those in 2012.

This rise comes as payments introduced by the Liberal Democrats in Government begin to have a greater impact.

The pupil premium puts additional money into schools with more children from disadvantaged backgrounds in order to help close the gap between them and their peers.
