The Liberal Democrats on Surrey County Council are calling for urgent action to tackle the sharp rise in the number of people killed and seriously injured on Surrey's roads. This follows the recently released figures for 2014 showing that Surrey had the third largest increase in people killed and seriously injured in England and Wales. The number of deaths on Surrey roads more than doubled, increasing from 18 to 38 deaths.

The Children’s Improvement Plan 2015 to improve Surrey’s inadequate Children’s Services was today published by the County Council. The plan was required following the Ofsted inspection report published in June 2015 that rated Surrey’s Children’s Service as ”inadequate”. Inspectors concluded that there were “widespread and serious failures that potentially leave children at risk of harm.”
Schools are out for the summer holidays which means lots of people from the South East will be travelling across Europe for a well-deserved break.
People will be taking all forms of transport to get to their holiday destinations. European air, rail and coach passengers now have more rights than they probably know about. For example, if you are waiting for your flight in the departure lounge and the flight is delayed, under EU law you are entitled to free food, drink and, if the delay is more than five hours, you will be fully compensated for your flight.Read more
South East MEP Catherine Bearder has called on the EU to take action to help address the ongoing chaos at Calais that is disrupting the normal flow of traffic and having a huge knock-on effect on the region.
The reintroduction of Operation Stack in Kent has led to huge delays for holidaymakers and hauliers attempting to make the crossing into Calais. Yesterday the Federation of Small Businesses wrote to the UK Government warning that Operation Stack was having a severe economic impact on businesses in Kent and across the South East.Read more

I wanted to share with you my thoughts on some sections of the Budget. I haven't covered all of it otherwise this email really would go on for ever. I have focussed on those aspects that I believe are particularly important, not least as they provide an insight into how this new Tory government is going to behave, and what it's priorities are.
