Kent Liberal Democrats Call on County Council to Fly Red Ensign for Merchant Navy Day
The Liberal Democrat Group at Kent County Council has formally requested that the Red Ensign be flown from County Hall this Thursday, 3rd September, to mark Merchant Navy Day.
3rd September commemorates the anniversary of the sinking of the SS Athenia, the first British merchant casualty of the Second World War. The day also honours the historical sacrifices made by Merchant Navy crews and the vital, ongoing contributions of modern seafarers to the UK economy.
"Because of our geographical position as the Gateway to the UK, Kent County Council has a distinct duty to visibly champion the contribution of our seafarers," said Cllr Antony Hook, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group at KCC.
"We must stand up for their rights, ensuring that operators utilising Kent’s ports adhere to high standards of fair pay, safe working conditions, and job security for their crews. Raising the Red Ensign is a simple but powerful gesture of respect for the unsung heroes of our economy."
The Red Ensign has sometimes been flown at County Hall on Merchant Navy Day but this has not continued since Reform took power in May 2025.
The merchant navy is critical and is an entirely civilian workforce.
Councillor Hook said,
"Seafarers transport over 90% of the UK’s imports, including half of the nation's food, fuel, and vital supplies. Kent relies heavily on the economic engines of its ports at Dover, Folkestone, Sheerness, Ramsgate, and others. Crews frequently endure dangerous environments, navigate increasing global security risks, and spend long periods away from their families to keep supply chains functioning. International sea trade acts as an engine for peace and cooperation, forging global ties that foster mutual respect across borders.
The Liberal Democrat Group is urging KCC to make a firm annual commitment to fly the flag, joining several hundred other UK councils, including Dover District Council, Faversham Town Council, and Sevenoaks District Council, that already officially recognise Merchant Navy Day ashore.
Alongside raising the Red Ensign, the group is calling for KCC to in future:
Host a formal annual flag-raising ceremony inviting local maritime charities, trade unions representing Kent seafarers, and maritime employers.
Actively highlight maritime careers to young people through KCC's education and skills teams, utilising excellent local assets like the National Maritime Training Centre at Gravesend.
