Farage’s plan to scrap asylum is “morally bankrupt, legally illiterate, and a death sentence for victims of torture”
Responding to Nigel Farage’s pledge to completely abolish the UK asylum system for at least 5 years, a spokesperson for the Kent Liberal Democrats said:
“Britain is a great, strong country, and here in Kent we know that better than anyone. From the Huguenots arriving on our shores to Holocaust survivors finding refuge here, our county has a long, proud history of welcoming people with a genuine need of sanctuary. That quiet decency and strength of character is part of who we are.
“Let us be completely clear about what Nigel Farage is actually proposing: he is demanding that Britain slam the door on human beings facing a provable, documented certainty of murder, rape, or state torture.
“He is looking Afghan interpreters who served alongside British troops, Iranian women facing execution for demanding basic freedom, and dissidents brutalised by authoritarian regimes in the eye and saying: we do not care if you die.
“To boast about tearing up the 1951 UN Refugee Convention—a framework British jurists helped draft in the ashes of the Holocaust precisely so victims of genocide and torture would never be abandoned—is not patriotism. It is cowardice, and it betrays the best traditions of our country and our county.
“Farage’s plan won't stop the crossings. It would simply hand absolute control of our coastline to ruthless people-smuggling gangs, pushing desperate people entirely underground into modern slavery and the black market right across Kent and the South East.
“You do not show strength by sending torture survivors back to their deaths. You do not secure our borders with populist soundbites. What our communities need is competence.
"Smash the smuggling networks through joint policing operations with France and Europol.
"Open controlled safe routes to kill off the black market.
"Clear the backlog so genuine refugees are protected while those with no right to be here are swiftly returned.”
Completely wiping out Britain’s asylum framework would strip away every legal safeguard protecting individuals at verifiable risk of state execution, torture, and wartime violence, violating the bedrock international principle of non-refoulement. Far from securing our coastline, abolishing the system would serve as an open charter for organized crime. Desperate families fleeing certain death will not vanish; instead, removing legal oversight guarantees they are driven straight into the shadows of human trafficking, exploitation, and modern slavery across local communities.
The Liberal Democrats believe genuine border security requires competence rather than cruelty. We would replace political gimmicks with hard enforcement, partnering directly with Europol and French authorities to dismantle cross-channel smuggling networks, while establishing controlled, safe routes to collapse the gangs' business model. Crucially, that means rebuilding an efficient Home Office that adjudicates claims rapidly—granting immediate protection to the genuinely persecuted while swiftly returning those who have no legal right to remain.
