Given that Kent has a grammar school system it was unfair that Sevenoaks area did not have its own grammar school, resulting in pupils having to travel long distances. Lib Dems at KCC have therefore supported the principle of grammar provision in Sevenoaks.
However, we believe that the removal of travelling costs from pupils attending grammar schools in Kent by the Conservative County Council was outrageous and is resulting in grammar schools being restricted to pupils whose parents can afford to pay.
We also have concerns that the current Government rules do not allow places to be restricted to Sevenoaks or even Kent pupils.
Additionally the new 'annexe' will need to work hard to provide a rounded education for pupils who will enter the school only one year 7 group per year, and operate with teachers being shared with the mother school some nine miles away.
