At the General Election in Lewes on 7th June 2001, 45433 votes were cast (approximately 68% of the total number of eligible voters) with the following result:

Norman Baker (Liberal Democrat): 25588 votes.

Simon Sinnatt (Conservative): 15878 votes.

Paul Richards (Labour): 3317 votes.
