At the General Election in Dover on 7th June 2001, 44960 votes were cast (approximately 65% of the total number of eligible voters) with the following result:

Gwyn Prosser (Labour): 21943 votes.

Paul Watkins (Conservative): 16744 votes.

Anthony Hook (Liberal Democrat): 5131 votes.
