Kent Parliamentary Constituencies

The ceremonial county of Kent, (which includes the unitary authority of Medway), is divided into 17 Parliamentary constituencies - 1 Borough constituency and 16 County constituencies.

Current proposals by the Boundary Commission for England would retain these 17 constituencies, with changes to realign constituency boundaries with the boundaries of current local government wards, and to reduce the electoral disparity between constituencies. They have however recommended two name changes: Gillingham to Gillingham and Rainham to reflect the similar stature of the two towns, and Medway to Rochester and Strood to avoid confusion with the larger Medway unitary authority.

South East Region European Parliament Election Results

Elections to the European Parliament take place every 5 years, with the last election on 10 June 2004. The next is due on 11 June 2009.

Since 1999, elections to the European Parliament have been held under a form of proportional representation - the "Regional List". Under the Regional List system, the proportion of seats elected for each Party should reflect the proportion of the votes received by each Party in that region.

In 1999, Emma Nicholson and Chris Huhne were elected as the 2 Liberal Democrat MEPs out of the 10 for the South East Region. In 2005, Chris Huhne and Emma Nicholson were re-elected, despite the number of MEPs for the region falling from 10 to 9.

On 5 May 2005, Chris Huhne was elected as Member of Parliament for Eastleigh. Under the rules of the Regional List system, the seat passed to Sharon Bowles, who became a Liberal Democrat Member of the European Parliament on 25 May 2005.
