Liberal Democrats triumph in Maidstone Borough Council by-election

10.07.00am GMT Fri 1st Dec 2006

The Liberal Democrats have stormed to victory in a key by-election in Maidstone, Kent. After losing by just seven votes in May, Liberal Democrat candidate Rob Field has been elected Councillor for Park Wood by a majority of 217 votes.

The by-election was held after the resignation of Labour Councillor, James Cook. If the Conservatives had taken the seat, they would have gained overall control of Maidstone Borough Council.

Rob's resounding success is proof that local residents back his commitment to tackle anti-social issues and improve quality of life. The newly-elected Councillor Field said:

"I'm delighted I now have the opportunity to represent the people of Park Wood and work hard to address their issues and concerns. It's time to start fighting for our community."

Total Votes:

  • Liberal Democrats - 347

  • Labour - 130

  • Conservatives - 125

19.2% turnout.
