Reacting to the news that the IOC has decided on London to host the 2012 Olympic Games, Liberal Democrat MEP for the South East Sharon Bowles said:

"I'm delighted that the IOC has recognised London's Olympic-friendly merit as a cosmopolitan and proudly multicultural city. This is a moment for the whole country to be proud not least in the South East where many of the events are expected to be held."

The boating lake at Eton Dorney will host rowing and flatwater caneo/Kayak racing and the shooting range at Bisley in Surrey, which hosted the shooting events for the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester is likely to host the event in 2012.

"London's diversity won the bid. It is open and comfortable with diversity, essential for a city that expects an international role."

"Great congratulations are due to Lord Seb Coe and his team who have done a magnificent job in convincing the Olympic movement of our fitness for this honour."

"The challenge now is not only to ensure we put on a first-class Games, but also that the legacy in transport, sports and housing infrastructure improves the quality of life for everyone in the region for decades thereafter."
